Antigypsyism

Central Council of the German Sinti and Roma with funds of German Ministry of Foreign Affairs: The project should focus on analysing the current policy approaches towards Roma in the Western Balkan and proposing alternatives to the current policy approaches. The project will pay particular attention to combating antigypsyism, but also to the participation of Romani representatives in policy-making and community empowerment.

It envisages the use the outcomes as advocacy tools during the German EU Presidency in 2020 in order to achieve alternative policy approaches. The project will be implemented with partner organizations in each of the Western Balkan countries.

Antigypsyism constitutes the root cause of the discrimination and exclusion of Roma, irrespective of the country they live in. Therefore, the recognition and combating of antigypsyism is the pre-condition for any other (successful) policy intervention. However, yet combating antigypsyism and its consequences on both the lives of Roma and the policies towards Roma are not fully recognized in the Western Balkans.

In addition to these three issues, the analysis will also include country-specific issues.

In a second component, advocacy will be conducted in other Member States of the European Union and with institutions of the European Union.
