During the past days, the Municipal Planning Team, together with the consulting company engaged in drafting the Municipal Development Plan (MDP) of Mitrovica South, has held meetings with the residents of urban area’s neighborhoods to explain the MDP drafting process and to obtain their comments and feedback. During the meeting for Ilirida and Fidanishte neighborhoods, the Inclusive Development Programme’s team (UN-Habitat and CBM) has presented suggestions for sustainable and inclusive spatial and socio-economic development of these neighborhoods, developed during the Urban Design and Development Workshop with students. Among the presented ideas were the linkage of the neighborhoods with Ibër River, increment of the neighborhood safety, improvement of the road infrastructure, creation of the public and green spaces network, creation of urban community gardens, creation of inclusive cultural spaces (university library and exhibition venues), revitalization of the Green Market (through the implementation of the closed system or its displacement to the river’s proximity), creation of the Zone for Business, Technology and Multimedia Incubators (which would serve for youth star-ups), building student dormitories and providing related services, as well as increment of the neighborhoods density (to shelter more people in proximity to the city center and to increase employment). Even though these ideas were conceptual only, they were well accepted by the residents and served as a starting point for the discussion of their other needs. Meanwhile, ideas that are feasible to be implemented are expected to be included within the MDP for the period of 2020-2028. As a reminder, the idea behind Neighborhood Based Planning Deliberation is to sprout the dialogue between the communities and the local government, and to include the communities within the planning processes.
